Delhi Jal Board Complaints

DJB supplying dirty water.

Delhi Jal Board has been in news now for quite a sometime. Either for supplying contaminated water or for supplying no water at all to the unauthorized colonies. There have been many protests against DJB and Sheila Dikshit for the same but no strict action has been taken yet. Kamal Kiran Sethi, who is the general secretary of RWA, wrote to CEO of Delhi Jal Board "Drinking water is not supplied for days and weeks. If at all there is water supply, it is dirty and contaminated." He complained that the unofficial water tankers mafias are gaining a lot by selling water to the needy and this should not be tolerated.
If we have a look on the census, we will find that there are almost 12000 workers and officials who are not getting potable water. According to Sethi, 12000 is a small number, there are so many who are not getting proper supply of water.

Water test throws up dirty results

To check quality of water these days has become must. Recent deaths in South Delhi had threatened Delhiites; many have complained about the degrading quality of water and asked for the test of water samples. South and north municipal bodies and the Delhi Jal Board conducted a joint water test, which gave extremely disappointing result. 25(14.2%) out of 176 samples contained contaminated water. There was a separate test conducted by civic bodies which found 40 out of 662 samples unfit, 37 in north and 3 in south.

Another test was conducted on April 20th for the check of chlorine in water. This test also was conducted by both, civic bodies and DJB. 47 samples were taken from South Delhi, out of which 3 were unfit for drinking. On the other hand, from Karol bagh which falls under north Delhi, civic bodies found 10 samples out of 75, unfit for drinking. And in the test of DJB, 5 out of 20 samples were contaminated.

Civic staff also took samples from Narela in North West Delhi; there the result was shocking, 20 samples out of 70 were dirty. And at same place, DJB found 20 out of 56 samples, unfit. Nagpal said that these results should be taken very seriously or it can cause many deaths. CEO of Delhi Jal Board said "DJB is alert to every issue of contamination," the tests had been done in those areas where there were maximum complaints, so this result cannot be taken for whole Delhi. A strict action will be taken as soon as possible. This is the promise made by Debashree Banerjee.

Delhi: Water utility spells summer plan

Heat, this time is at its peak point; not only human beings but animals are also finding ways to protect themselves from this heat. Delhi Jal Board has claimed that, there will be no problem of water these summers. All arrangements have been made to fight heat this time. The board has marked water deficient areas and has also added new pipeline networks. Rain Water harvesting is also a very efficient step taken by DJB.

There is a huge gap between the demand and supply of water. According to estimation, total production by DJB is 835 million gallons per day but the demand these summers is 1080 million gallons per day.
Sanjam Chima, DJB’s consultant in public relation department assured people that those who are not able to get water through pipelines will get water through tankers. Areas where pipelines can’t reach, tankers will be send to those areas. Everything has been planned by DJB; number of tankers to be provided, areas where tankers are required and other important things.
